SATER

The Scottish Accountancy Trust for Education and Research (SATER), registered Scottish Charity SC034836, was established in 2003. Its objectives are to promote research into, and education of accountancy, finance and management together with all subjects in any way related.

SATER provides grant funding for the high quality academic research within its specified areas, which is timely, relevant, and useful to the accountancy profession and in the public interest. It also provides assistance to academics wishing to present the findings from their research at relevant conferences. Grants for academic research are made through the research programme of ICAS, but applications can also be made directly to the Trust.

SATER's trust deed requires it to act in the public interest and charity law requires it to deliver public benefit.  With this in mind the Trustees have prepared a paper which considers both concepts in the context of SATER's activities.

In December 2011, SATER established the ICAS Foundation to remove the barriers to entering financial education, the wider profession and related disciplines, for disadvantaged young people identified by ICAS members and others as being in need of money, mentoring and momentum.  Click here to find out more about the ICAS Foundation.

In 2005 SATER set up the Helen Jones Appeal Fund Scholarship in memory of the young Chartered Accountant who was killed in the 7 July London bombings. Details about the Fund and the annual scholarship it provides are available here. The recipient of the 2013 award is Jay Bryson, Lockerbie Academy.

SATER is pleased to sponsor the annual ICAS Annual Aileen Beattie Memorial Lecture. The 2013 Lecture, "The Role of the Audit in the Global Economy", was delivered by James R Doty, Chairman of the US Public Company Accounting Oversight Board on 18 April 2013 in London.

The Scottish Chartered Accountant's Trust for Education (SCATE), a separate charity with similar objectives to SATER, transferred its assets, liabilities and operations to SATER on 30 June 2010 and was then subsequently wound up. SATER therefore now has responsibility for maintaining a Prize Fund from which prizes are awarded to University students and CA students. SATER will now also reemphasise its ability to provide grants for education related initiatives.

The Trustees have set up this website to make interested parties more aware of the research work that SATER supports and the related research reports which are published. The full text of some of these research reports can be downloaded for free. In addition to this, each year the Trustees publish an annual report containing SATER’s financial statements.
